ATV/UTV trailers are a great option for safely and securely transporting powersports vehicles, but they need to be properly loaded in order to get these benefits. Use the following step-by-step guide to set yourself up for a safe driving experience.

Get the Tow Vehicle and ATV/UTV Trailer Ready

1. Find the Right Setup Spot.

Look for an area with even ground and limited slopes. This will make the following steps much easier.

2. Connect the ATV/UTV Trailer and the Tow Vehicle.

Hook up the trailer and double check that it is level. Place chocks in front of all the wheels to improve its stability during the loading process.

3. Position the Ramp.

If the ramp is connected to the ATV/UTV trailer, lower it now. If the ramp is separate, attach it and double check that it is secure.

4. Add the Connections

Hook up the chains, wires, and other such connections between the tow vehicle and the ATV/UTV trailer. Safety chains should make an "X" formation under the tongue. Double check that the brake and electrical connections are all in place.

Load Up the Powersports Vehicle

1. Remember the Safety Gear

Accidents can and do happen when loading up ATVs and UTVs. Take the extra few minutes to throw on some safety gear just in case.

2. Strike the Right Balance with Speed

Drive the powersports vehicle too fast and you can overshoot the target. Drive too slow and you may not make it up the ramp. Focus on maintaining the right balance.

It’s also helpful to focus on driving in a straight line. This will help you position the ATV or UTV's weight evenly from left to right onto the trailer itself.

3. Secure the Powersports Vehicle

A loose ATV or UTV can get tossed about during the drive, which can damage the vehicle itself and the trailer. Before you hit the road, make sure the powersports vehicle is properly secured.

Put the ATV or UTV in park and engage the parking brake. Use straps to tie down the vehicle. Walk around the ATV/UTV trailer and tug the powersports vehicle from different angles to double check your work. Add more straps as needed.

Keep Safe Towing Practices in Mind

The extra weight from the ATV/UTV trailer and its cargo will affect your tow vehicle's handling. The turning radius, stopping distance, and so on will be altered. Take advantage of defensive driving tactics, such as leaving more space between yourself and the other vehicles on the road, to keep yourself safe on the road.
